Scarlet Macaw, Ara macao, español Lapa Roja

This endangered beauty is always a delight to see flying over the area. There are only 300 individuals thought to be left in our area of the South Pacific Slope.

Chestnut-Mandibled Toucan, Ramphastos swainsonii

This oddly proportioned bird is a wondrous site to behold, as it flies with its massive bill in search of fruit.

A Pair of Scarlet Macaws, Ara macao, español Lapa Roja

These birds mate for life and can be seen flying as pairs, family groups of 3-4, or flocks of up to 25+ in our area.

Black-Throated Trogon, Trogon rufus

This bird has been referred to as a "sexy bird", we would have to agree that it is a favorite one to see while in Carara Reserve.

Gray-Headed Tanager, Eucometis penicillata

This bird is usually seen following army ants in order to catch insects fleeing from the ants.

Bi-Colored Antbird, Gymnopithys leucaspis

Like the Gray-headed Tanager, the Bicolored Antbird is an ant follower. Somewhat rare in the area it is reason enough to stick around when you see an antswarm.

Anhinga, Anhinga anhinga

This bird swims slowly and stealthily underwater to ambush prey with it's spear of a bill.
