Drew graduated from the Evergreen State College, (TESC) in 1996, where he studied ecology and agriculture. Since then he has worked on numerous research projects in the United States and in the neotropics. He has also worked for consulting firms as a biologist. His most cherished and influential work experience has been working with Dr. Steve Herman as an assistant in the field. He is glad that the opportunity to start THIBS has given him a chance to honor the contributions of Dr. Herman to biology, education and conservation. |

Casey graduated from The Evergreen State College in 2000. During and after his education he explored a variety of field research sites both in the United States and abroad and worked with birds, herps, and small mammals during that time. He is hoping to couple his term at The Institute with a graduate education. His current long-term life goal is to help, as a teacher and a scientist, in the conservation of our world’s habitats and organisms. This is a goal modeled after his experiences with Dr. Steve Herman. |

Dr. Carlisle’s scientific interests lie in the fields of ornithology, community
ecology, and conservation biology. He shares Casey’s major life goal
of contributing to conservation.
Jay graduated with a B.S. from the Evergreen State College (TESC) in 1995. After graduating, he spent several years as a migrant field biologist and also developed a passion for migratory birds. He is presently studying the habitat use and stopover biology of autumn migrants in Idaho for which he redieved his doctorate at the University of South Dakota. He also serves as Songbird Research Coordinator for the Idaho Bird Observatory. Jay has traveled to Latin America several times, including a recent trip to Costa Rica, in order to get familiar with neotropical birds and their habitats. He is still working on his Spanish-speaking skills but hopes to devote future efforts to cooperative, conservation-oriented studies of migrant and resident birds in Latin America. |

Jean-Jacques graduated in 1978 from the University of Pharmacy, Paris. After graduation, he worked in the Ivory Coast, Africa as a biology teacher for five years. He then returned to France to graduate from the Nantes University of Pharmacy with his PhD in Pharmacochemestry, studying anticancerous drugs from marine invertebrates.
Thinking of a real future outside of a lab, he purchased a pharmacy in the French West Indies. Eight years later, he retired in Costa Rica in 1995 with his lovely family and continues to dedicate himself to the conservation of nature and to his teenage passion: birding. He is currently "working" as a bird guide all over Costa Rica, and the world. |
| Local soccer star, Luis Campos Monge is a Boat Guide, Carpenter, and all around "do it yourself" kind of guy. As a guide, his eyes are quicker than any seasoned birder I have ever seen on his tours. Luis has seen the Mangrove Hummingbird more than any other person alive, and can take you to their perch, if the birds cooperate.
Luis and his family, Iveth and daughters Faviola and Cristel, live in Playa Azul. Luis grew up fishing and has a deep knowledge and respect for the natural world, a somewhat rare attribute in the local populace. |
