Current Research and OpportunitiesThe Herman Institute of Biological Studies is commited to conducting and supporting research at many levels. We recognize the importance of science at the professional level and also at the educational level. Thus, there are opportunities for just about anyone at THIBS. The individual can develop his or her own study, at any level, or can also help with any of our many ongoing research projects. We are equipped to support graduate students looking to do research in the area, and are eager to facilitate this happening. We welcome any interested undergraduate interns, and can develop programs of study and work on an individual basis if needed. We have had several succesful college interns to date. Our own current focus is on our Mangrove Hummingbird study. We believe that the vulnerability of mangrove habitats and the protracted range of this species makes it a priority for conservation efforts within Costa Rica. We also concentrate our efforts on our migrant studies as many of our affiliated scientists have strong interests in this area.
THIBS can not fund any individual research projects, other than their own. However, potential researchers can apply for free housing, or reduced rates. Also, work exchange for housing and use of the facilities is a possibility.
Interested parties should send a statement of interest, a short description of intended research, and contact information for three character references, (or arrange for references to contact us) to the Director, Drew Wheelan (awheelan@hermaninstitute.org).
